Stems

 Stems by: Melina

In second grade we are learning about stems, plants can grow from stems. Stems can be tall and short. Not all stems are straight and tall. Roots suck up the water, and then the water and food travel in the stem. Stems support the leaves.

fibonacci numbers

fibonacci numbers are a  pattern in nature.when ever you see a flower the number of petals on that flower will always be a fibonacci number.

Measurement and 2nd Grade

Mrs. Davis's class has been working on measurement.  We are learning about how to use nonstandard measuring tools like tiles and inchworm rulers.  We are also learning about standard measuring tools like rulers and yardsticks.  We wanted to use what we have learned to measure the distance across the playground finding the nearest yard.  Then we worked together to convert the number of yards into feet and inches to see how they are related.

What did we do and find out?
It was a chilly 26 degrees when we went outside to measure!  We used yardsticks as our measure tool.  We worked in groups.  Each of us had an important job.  There were the yardstick holders.  They were in charge of the yardstick.  There was the Measuring Helper.  They used their finger to hold the place of the yardstick and helped count the number of yards.  There was also the Recorder.  They were responsible for keeping track of the number of yards by using tallies.

We found out that there are about 38 yards across our playground…That means there are about 114 feet, which converts to 1,368 inches!  We are so glad we measured in yards and not inches!
